Ian, General Manager
I came to Apex after gaining many years experience in the Insurance trade. I progressed through claim handling to becoming a training manager responsible for delivering and creating training programs throughout the country.
As the General Manager at Apex, I am responsible for the day to day overseeing of company activities and for developing and implementing new company policies, procedures and processes to allow Apex to grow. I am committed to people’s development and it is important to me that all staff members have the tools and skills to grow.
I enjoy my life to the full outside of work. My wife and two young lads keep me on my toes most of the time, yet I still make time to play golf, watch Newcastle United and also squeeze in the odd pint or two with friends.
Helen, Senior Sales Executive
Hi , I am Helen and I have worked at Apex for 14 years, arriving shortly after leaving University, where I received a BA(hons) degree from Leeds Metropolitan University. When I started I came in at a junior level and helped with day to day tasks in data control, I then quickly developed a role within the company for an accounts and administration team, where I took control of the day to day accounting activities. I then landed in my current role in 2011 where I work within the Sales Team handling enquiries and assisting on larger proposals and projects. Working across departments has helped me gain a good understanding of the business we work in and also of our customer base and their requirements not just for the sale of equipment but for the ongoing life of their radios.
My favourite days at work are those where we are all busy working towards the same goal, of delivering great customer service on a bespoke system for our clients, coming to the end of a long project and the customer being satisfied is what makes it worth it.
Outside of work I enjoy learning new things and take part in short courses in crafts, interior design, textiles, literature and cooking. I enjoy travelling and spending time with family and friends especially my best friend and Husband Mark. On lazy days we indulge in box set marathons –my recent favourites being True Detective, Breaking Bad and Hannibal.
Holly, Sales Executive
I joined Apex in March 2010, where I have been part of the Sales team. I am responsible for handling customer enquiries and recommending the most suitable product to fit individual needs and requirements.
My highest achievement to date is completing my NVQ Level 3 in Sales and also in Business Administration.
My most exciting days at work are Fridays (As it’s almost the weekend woo hoo!). I also enjoy days where I get to meet with customers and discuss their requirements face to face, seeing the job through from start to finish. It gives me great satisfaction seeing a customer happy with their end product and feeling that Apex has provided great customer service.
Outside of work I enjoy socialising with friends and dining out. I like visiting new destinations and trying new experiences such as Sky Diving and White Water Rafting! When I have my feet on the ground I’m also fond of locking myself indoors and getting my teeth into a good TV Boxset, particularly on cold winter nights.
Joe, Financial Controller
Nicknames: Mr Toad, Toady, Toadboy, Clarkey, Big Joe.
I have been doing my time at Apex Radio Systems 6 years now always being a part of the Accounts Department. I am responsible for the day to day running of the accounts ranging from Credit Control, Cash Flow, Management Accounts, Purchase Ledger & developing company systems to help save time for Apex Staff members.
I have recently completed the AAT Accountancy Qualification Level 3 and am currently working towards the Final Level of the Course which is Level 4.
I am a Season Ticket holder at the Stadium of Light for my Sins, much to the dismay of all of my colleagues who try to persuade me to join the dark side of Newcastle United.
Even though I have a very keen interest in all sport, unfortunately I am not very good at the playing side of them, even though I will always make a fool out of myself and give it a go.
Paul S, Accounts Assistant
Nicknames: Quiffy, Birds Nest
Hailing from the Heed, I joined Apex in October 2011 having completed (albeit not particularly well) my A Levels at Newcastle College. While I have some very decent GCSE’s I hope to work towards my AAT Accounting certificates in the near future. My job role is admin/accounts assistant. The earlier parts of my career at Apex were dominated by ‘the game’, for which I mainly suffered the consequences thanks to HPD & Big Joe.
A massive fan of sports and music, I am a firm follower of Newcastle United being a season ticket holder since 2010, with my favourite band being Led Zeppelin. This means I spend most of time drowning my sorrows in Town or traveling the UK to gigs. The most important things in my life are friends and family, after all, what is the point in earning a wage, if you can’t spend it having fun. In my youth I also managed to capture 124 of the original 150 Pokemon, an outstanding achievement I’m sure you will agree! In addition, I would also like to put it on record that I do not have a perm, although Kevin Keegan was impressed when I met him at a function.
Michelle, Accounts Administrator
Hi, my name is Michelle and I have worked in the Accounts department at Apex since January 2008. My main role is to carry out the day to day tasks within the account department e.g invoicing, banking and dealing with customer accounts. While at Apex I have completed my Business Administration NVQ Levels 2 & 3.
I have a 2 year old son called Dominic who is of course the apple of my eye. I spend much of my spare time playing with Dominic and going for walks with my dog. When I finally get time to myself I enjoy reading and eating.
Nicola, Customer Services Supervisor
I started at Apex back in November 1994 on a Youth Training Scheme initially handling general administration and accounts. In the first couple of years here I also completed my NVQ Business Computing Level 3 with an out of house training provider which has helped me greatly in my work.
Over the years working at Apex I have took on many roles in the company including Marketing and Sales. I am currently working in Customer Service and I also take responsibility via auditing and management of our company’s ISO European Quality Standard.
Some of my favourite times at work have included travelling out from the office to meet our customers, attending exhibitions to promote Apex to other businesses and also co-hosting customer hospitality events at Newcastle United’s St. James’ Park Stadium.
After work I try to go to see as many of my favourite bands and artists playing live as possible and spend quality time with my friends and family when I am not working behind the bar at my second job at a local events and music venue.
Andrew, Customer Services Advisor
Hello, my name is Andrew. I work as a customer services advisor predominantly in the repairs department. I joined Apex in April of this year (2014) through the apprenticeship agency. My highest qualifications are my GCSE’s, I began to work on my A-levels but left mid way through to pursue a career in writing. I had mild success in that field, having several works published in magazines and prominent online websites.
Although just being in my infancy with the company and the medium of radio, I have enjoyed working in the field. If I had to choose my most exciting day it would be processing the repairs for the football Association. I had only been at the company a few weeks at the time and I remember thinking to myself: “I’m in a small way helping the sport I’ve loved all my life”
Katie, Administration Assistant
Hello, my name is Katie and I have been with Apex since June this year (2014). My job role is Administration Assistant, and even though I have not been at Apex very long, I have tackled a lot of important responsibilities. My highest completed education is my GCSEs. I started on a Level 3 Applied Science course but did not finish as it was not really my thing! I started at Apex through an apprentice scheme over at Team Valley and thought this job would be perfect for me. My most exciting moment at work was when I was given the task of raising the orders for all of the equipment we use here.
Lenka, Marketing Executive
Hello! My name is Lenka and I am with Apex since April 2014. I work as Marketing Executive where alongside building and sustaining Apex brand reputation, I am developing strategic marketing campaigns what includes planning, scheduling and delivering messages across multiple media. I also take care of our website, blog and social media. After BA (Hons) in Advertising and Marketing Communication I completed MSc degree in Mass Communication Management and I am currently working towards Google Adwords qualification.
The best days at work are definitely Fridays (Friday Fun Day!). The best bit of my work is doing stuff around Google. Also somehow I enjoy learning about exciting world of radios!
Outside of work I spend hours on Skype with my family. My super favourite thing to do is to dine in restaurants and try out new places. I also love to cook. Well, I am one big food (and wine) lover. I also travel around a bit.
Paul, Project Development Engineer
I am currently Apex’s representative in Ireland handling all of the service aspects of the business from sales all the way through to installation and commission of systems and on going technical support. I deal with all customers on the island of Ireland as well as providing technical support to my colleagues in Newcastle when needed. I started at Apex in 2005, working from junior engineer to supervising the day to day running workshop before moving to Ireland in May 2011.
Before working for Apex, I completed a degree in Microelectronics and Software Engineering which is put to good use in the more technical aspects of my work.
The best days at work are completing the installation of wide area systems and dealing with the challenges that this type of system including dealing with unexpected changes in situation to ensure that the system is completed to the standard which the customer needs in the time frame required.
In my personal time, I enjoy watching Newcastle United F.C., Formula One and listening to music particularly heavy rock and metal.
Richard H, Senior Systems Engineer
Hi, I’m Richard and I’m now into my eighteenth year at Apex. Qualified to HND level in Electronic/Electrical Engineering. After a hard few years getting my head around radio theory and customer service philosophy, I found myself responsible for the service team and their routine and dynamic tasks, managing some difficult and challenging projects. My current role is Senior Systems Engineer, where I am mainly dealing with new and existing customer’s requirements to develop, improve and often upgrade their radio systems.
The best bits at work are meeting potential customers and fixing customer equipment that needs to be operational NOW.
The best bits (outside of work) are being a Dad, my lovely family and mates. Music, listening, playing, performing, sessions, open mics, busking and songwriting (chosen methods of destruction are mandolin, harmonica and singing).
Oh yes, and in the words of my seven year old daughter “Daddy does radios but when he isn’t busy with that he’s a pirate”.
Graeme, Systems Engineer
Enlisted in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in 1978,trained as a Telecommunications Technician. Participated in many and varied outdoor activities including camping in all weathers. Left the Army in !990 as a Class 1 Telecommunications Technician in the rank of Sergeant. I was fortunate enough to get a position close to home in the Radio communications Industry and I have been involved in Radio communications to date. I have in the past coached Archery, owned and sailed an Enterprise sailing dinghy and a Catapult catamaran. My current and longest lived hobby is motorcycling.
Keith, Customer Services Engineer
I left school in 1976 with 2 A levels and started work as an apprentice radio engineer for R.T. Systems Ltd, firstly fitting radio and aerials into vehicles then progressing to bench repairs. A 3 year course at Charles Trevelyan Technical College saw me qualify in radio and line transitions and Electronic Servicing (C&G 224).
I was the field engineer for both R.T. Systems and R.T.M.S. Ltd for many years until joining Apex in May 2012 as Customer Service Engineer, this sees me dealing with customers from the initial call, to site surveys, planning a system, giving quotations and then back to site to install and commission any hardware or background infrastructure required.
This has taken me from HT voltage valve equipment in the 70’s to super fast processors linked via internet protocol over private microwave links.
On a personal note I am married and have two children, both now live in their own homes but still spend a lot of time with their noses stuck in my fridge.
A retired international sidecar racer I now ride old motorcycles for fun and follow the Isle of Man TT and Moto GP when I get the chance. When not tinkering with the bikes I am fortunate to hold a private pilots licence and fly the aeroplane I share with my friend, mainly in beautiful Northumberland but sometimes on away day adventures.
Richard B, Systems Support Engineer
I joined the Apex team in May 1999, after doing 3 years at college; (strange coming from doing 3 years of Business Studies to be a Technician). It’s great to be part of fast growing service team. My role involves leading new projects in digital radios – anything from converting old and new shopwatch schemes, industrial factories, security industries, waste management etc. I have also carried work with 5G wireless links; linking two digital base stations over a wide area.
There are always new advancements in digital world which brings new achievements for me especially when I’m trying to offer customers its full potential. There is always something new to learn. As Apex is covering the whole UK; it can mean visiting customers throughout the country and in the 15 years that I have been working for Apex, I have covered some miles. It has been a challenging and big learning curve.
I’m married to frenchy for 7years now and have three beautiful daughters; one 8 years old and twins which are 16 months. In what spare time I have after the twins and 8year old going on teenage years my interests are motor-sport, woodwork, gardening, and what seems very rare now camping and hill walking.
Jackson, Service Technician
Hi, I’m Jackson and I have worked at Apex for 3 years and have been in the radio business since 2005. I have to say my favorite part of my job is the engineering side and especially like the thrill of working at heights. In my own time I am a family man, I enjoy spending time with my Girlfriend+ Bump and son as well as socializing. I have a big interest in martial arts and keeping fit.
David, Operations Controller
David joined the Apex team in March 2011, taking up the responsibilities of IT technician. David is responsible for ensuring the IT equipment for Apex runs smoothly and finding solutions to new technological challenges which arrive on a daily basis.
By ensuring that the IT aspects of the business run well, this in turn will help to contribute towards a professional, effective service to all our customers.
David is currently learning about the Radio Systems used by the business, and, as a result, should be able to provide a broad range of skills to benefit the team in the future.
David enjoys telling his fellow workers how they should play football properly, without being able to kick a ball himself. David also enjoys Golf, and has a keen interest in World War 2 military history. Musical interests include Ozzy Osbourne, Motley Crue and other such easy listening!
Ian H, Radio Repair Technician
Hi, my name is Ian. I have worked in the electronics industry all my working life – that’s almost sixty years. The last four years I worked for Apex Radio Systems.

Eric, Radio Repair Technician
Left school at 17 and entered into the Telecommunications Industry as an Apprentice where I was taught to City and Guilds of London Telecommunications T4 level.
Over time I have worked for nearly all the utility and communications companies, where I’ve gained experience in a multiple of disciplines from landlines to programming digital microwave systems. Radio Communication became one of these disciplines which was of special interest and most of my working career I’ve spent in this area. Now at the age of ## (Guess by the photo?) working for Apex Radio Systems over the last ten years has earned me The Grumpy Old Git coffee mug Award as issued by my colleagues for my contribution to the Repair Department.
My hobbies are traditional music and flying in general, flight simulation is a specialty. My hopes are to continue working for Apex until retirement which of course you guessed by the photo is a long long long way off.
