The International Centre for Life opened in 2000. Businesses within the Retail Birmingham Business improvement district were becoming increasingly concerned regarding business crime and anti-social behaviour and its negative effects on the city. As a direct response to this, Retail Birmingham created a new crime partnership named CITY SAFE Birmingham whose sole aim was to address these concerns and create a stronger, more robust partnership approach to reducing crime. Something which was much needed within the city. As the Business Improvement District Manager in the busy Erdington Town Centre I believe it is vital to ensure that all the businesses and local authorities are able to communicate effectively to reduce crime and disorder.
When another local BID recommended Apex Radio Systems had successfully upgraded their radio communication system I invited Apex to discuss our needs with a view to upgrade and was immediately impressed with their professionalism and knowledge to resolve all of our radio communication issues.
Before Apex installed our new Digital Shopwatch system we were using Analogue radios which struggled to reach many of the 200 businesses with the district. These coverage issues prevented the growth of the radio link throughout the BID area.
The Digital Radio System that Apex installed solved this problem, allowing coverage in the far ends of the high street as well as backrooms which previously had been complete blind spots.

“Harrogate has operated a CCTV scheme between shops, licensed premises and the CCTV Control room based in the town for over ten years. This was an analogue network that was installed by another radio provider at the outset of the scheme and owned by Harrogate Borough Council. The Council directly hired the radio handsets to scheme members as a revenue income.
Harrogate District also includes the towns of Ripon and Knaresborough. Both had a local Radiolink network organised by the police, but even though CCTV cameras were being monitored in both locations, CCTV operatorswere not part of the Radiolink owing to the distances involved.
Apex Radio Systems won the contract to replace the analogue network in Harrogate with a digital one, and to find a solution to the problem of getting Radiolink messages from both Ripon and Knaresborough back to CCTV control in Harrogate. After investigation and trial, an infrastructure using Harrogate Borough Council’s own intranet system to relay radio messages was installed by Apex, which was a “no cost” solution that has proved very effective. The outcome is a digital network covering Harrogate Town that has prompted positive feedback from many users of improved transmission clarity and reception, including CCTV operators themselves. That users in Ripon and Karesborough can now talk to CCTV operators in Harrogate at all times of day or nigh has proven a more attractive product for business resulting in an increased membership in both towns; this wouldn’t have been possible without going digital.
Throughout I have found Apex easy to deal with and from the outset they had a good appreciation of what Harrogate Council required, and the possible options available to meet our needs. Their costed proposals were clearly presented and of the three tenders we received, met our requirements at the most attractive price. Work was always carried out on time, and I was particularly impressed that on the day of Harrogate digital “go-live”, their technicians arrived from Newcastle despite heavy overnight snowfalls, an indication of their commitment to getting our scheme activated on schedule.
Apex offered an attractive revenue return to Harrogate Council per radio handset taken up by scheme members, and have taken over all aspects of member invoicing, which has lifted a burden from our finance department. Apex clearly has an organised administration department, as revenue payments to us are being made promptly without problem and orders for new members radios are handled quickly and efficiently using overnight couriers.
To date our experience with Apex Radio Systems has been only positive. Their solution to our requirement for a digital network covering the district has fully achieved that goal and their service has been both professional and courteous at all levels. “Milton Keynes Partners Against Crime have worked with Apex Radio Systems since 2009 when we put out to tender the radio link scheme. Back then we were looking for a radio company to give us a technically competent analogue radio system that would provide good coverage throughout Milton Keynes and also extend to Bletchley.

Nuffield Health has recently completed an enterprise programme of work to upgrade from Windows XP and refresh the hardware estate across 31 hospitals, 75 Fitness and Wellbeing centres, 4 Medical Centres and 6 Hospitals Sterile Services Units.
We ran four regional seven man teams over a 6 month period and needed an effective & efficient way for the team members to communicate with each other whilst on site. Apex Radios already have a presence at several Nuffield Health sites and were contacted to see what they could offer.
Having gathered our requirements, they proposed a couple of solutions which were successfully trialled free of charge at one of our pilot hospitals. They quickly set up the contract and delivered 28 radios and x6 way chargers direct to Nuffield sites. The radios proved invaluable during the roll out. “Valley Watch work in partnership with Retailers Against Crime North East and Retail World land agent Land Securities to assist the retail units with the security of the park.
